You’ll notice these reviews are light on afternoon tea. That’s because I gravitate towards teahouses and other kinds of tea experiences. I’ve also written about my issues with afternoon tea.

After the tea room reviews, just for fun, I share my review of an ice cream shop with dozens of NYC locations (including in Brooklyn and Manhattan). That shop, Van Leeuwen, includes a flavor or two (seasonally variable) of delicious tea-infused ice cream. I also share some other tea resources at the bottom of this post.

The snippets from the teahouse reviews throw headings into the sentences, but when you click on them, they’ll read smoothly.

Rooibos, or red bush tea, is generally more well known then green rooibos. Both herbal teas come from Aspalathus linearis. This plant is “a South African shrub from whose leaves a tea (infusion) is made that is high in antioxidants, and has low tannin content and no caffeine” (American Botanical Council).

This plant grows in the mountainous areas in Cederberg, South Africa. Although both types of the tea made from this plant contain antioxidants, “[g]reen (unfermented) rooibos tea has higher levels of antioxidants, while fermented rooibos tea has a sweeter taste” (Louw and Rooibos ltd.).

Processing, Leaves, Steeped Tea

Green rooibos leaves do not go through process that encourages oxidation, making the dried leaves predominantly yellow-green with some flecks of brown. Rooibos, by contrast, goes through the oxidation process. Thus, its leaves are mahogany brown. These color differences in the leaves come out even more pronounced in the colors of the steeped tisane, as seen in the photos below.

Rooibos and Green Rooibos Tasting Notes

I was perplexed when I started comparing different online tasting notes for rooibos and green rooibos online. Apparently, I find more similarities between them than many others do. There could be many reasons for different tasting notes. For example, physiology, food and flavor experience, water composition, and preparation can influence tasting notes.

I steeped both herbal teas the same way: I used water just off the boil, near 212F or 100C. I used about a teaspoon of tea per 8 ounces (235 ml) of water. Some tea websites, I later noticed, recommended a lower temperature for green rooibos. I’ll have to try that when I restock. Since Adagio Teas* recommended 100C, that’s what I used…and enjoyed!

There are layers of flavors in both steeped herbal teas. I’ll try to pin a description to a few of them. Both the rooibos and the green rooibos have bright and deep notes. The biggest difference, to me, is that the deeper notes are predominant in the rooibos and the brighter notes are more noticeable in the green rooibos.

The rooibos also has a more pronounced creamy vanilla flavor. Both have very pleasant “woody” flavors. If I had to pin down a difference between rooibos and green rooibos there, I’d say that green rooibos has more of the popsicle stick woodiness to me. (IYKYK) Some tea companies noted more vegetal flavors in the green rooibos. I didn’t find that at all. But, as noted above, I didn’t try steeping the green rooibos at a lower temperature.

Different Ways to Enjoy Rooibos

Both of these teas steep up with a lovely complexity and flavors that I enjoy very much without adding other flavors. I also enjoy Rooibos Vanilla–that combination pumps up the natural vanilla notes that I enjoy in an unflavored rooibos.

I’ve also enjoyed green rooibos steeped with cracked green cardamom pods and/or a pink rose bud or two added. In fact, I offered a blending experience to a local group of tea lovers in April. The green rooibos–plain and with these additions–was a big hit.

I like to steep regular rooibos double strength and then add milk sometimes. (This preparation is delicious hot or iced.) Steeped this way and hot, it is close to the color and density of drinking black tea with milk–how I grew up drinking tea. (The flavor is different from black tea with milk. But, I really like it!) Side note: As I’ve written before, our tea experience is about more than the flavor.

I’ve also had rooibos chai blends that I’ve really enjoyed.

Health Benefits and Risks

Rooibos and green rooibos contain antioxidants, as mentioned above. Although small studies have suggested more specific health benefits, as Healthline notes, “health claims relating to the tea are often anecdotal and not based on strong evidence.”

Always consult your doctor before regularly drinking an herbal tea. Be extra cautious if you have any health conditions. For example, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center mentions a couple of reported cases of liver toxicity for heavy drinkers of rooibos. They also state: “Rooibos tea has antioxidant effects and may interfere with the action of certain chemotherapeutic agents.” So, again, talk to your doctor about the potential risks of ANY herbs–including rooibos or green rooibos tea.

Bottom Line, Other Herbals, and Sources

I embrace the differences between rooibos and green rooibos teas. I thoroughly enjoy a cup of either, particularly in the evening when it’s too late for me to drink caffeine if I want to sleep well.

I’m finally sharing a blog review of Witches Brew on Long Island after over two decades of enjoying their tea, food, and vibes.

Witches Brew in Hempstead, New York a coffee house that serves tasty vegetarian and vegan food, desserts, coffee, and tea. For this tea blog, I’ll focus on their tea, the space, and food. I’ll also share some tips and insight on parking.

Substantial Tea Menu

No review of Witches Brew would be complete without mentioning its extensive (and delightfully funky and artsy) tea menu. (The photo below shows one of its many pages.) Their menu features a wide range of teas–including green, oolong, black, various spiced chai blends, and herbals. There is really something for all tea lovers.

Your teaware will vary. You could get an iron tea pot and an eclectic cup and saucer if you order the Tie Guan Yin (Iron Goddess of Mercy oolong). You could get a steel pitcher of hot tea and a tall cup of ice for your iced tea. If you order iced chai, it might be served in a glass jar.

The Space at Witches Brew

In a world full of coffee house chains and cookie-cutter restaurants, Witches Brew is a delightful exception. The decor is a mashup between Victorian, Goth aesthetics, and Halloween core.

Most of the coffee house’s interior is dimly lit; however, there is a “Florida room” dining area on one side that’s bright during the day time.

There’s a wonderful hodgepodge of styles, fabrics, patterns, and furniture. You could eat seated on a sofa or on floral patterned parlor chair, in front of a marble table or a low wooden coffee table.

Review of the Food at Witches Brew

The vegetarian and vegan food at Witches Brew is good! They have a nice range of choices–tacos, Thai curry, falafel, salads, sandwiches, gnocchi, etc. Everything I have tried has always been fresh and flavorful.

I’ve been gluten free the last year or so. I can still navigate the menu with plenty of choices. (Please note that I have the luxury of not being concerned about gluten cross contamination.)

I’ve heard the desserts are really good at Witches Brew. I’ve certainly seen some enticing cakes in the counter display area when I’ve walked in. Alas, I tend to visit midday and I’m usually too full of tea and lunch to order the dessert.

Address, Parking, and Tips

Address: 311 Hempstead Turnpike, West Hempstead, NY 11552

Parking: There’s free parking in front of Witches Brew and along the nearby side streets. During busy times, you can’t always park as close by as you might like.

Tips: Witches Brew is open Wednesday through Sunday.

They only accept cash. (There is an ATM inside the coffee house.)

Tea

You can order teas in the teahouse or online. We noticed an even wider selection in person than online. Both online and in person lists hot chai (sweetened or unsweetened) and iced chai. In person, we saw the extra detail that it was “Afghan Iced Chai with black tea and cardamom.” When asked, a barista shared that it was made with black tea, milk, cardamom, and condensed milk.

We loved the balance between the tea and the cardamom in the Afghan Iced Chai. Delightfully, the sweetened version wasn’t too sweet for me. My daughter and I both thought that in addition to the cardamom, we also detected a slight flavor and aroma of saffron–which we really liked. We guess that’s the alchemy of the tea and the other ingredients coming together.

Safwa Coffee & Teahouse also includes matcha lattes on the menu. My daughter ordered the Iced Pistachio Matcha. It was absolutely delicious! They use pistachio syrup, matcha, milk, and condensed milk. We forgot to ask whether you can use a milk substitute. I’ll update this post after we visit again.

Besides other flavored matcha latte choices–like Mango Matcha–we noticed a green tea with saffron that I look forward to trying during another visit.

The Space

I knew my review of Safwa Coffee & Teahouse would have to mention how spacious it is inside! It’s not as huge as nearby Qahwah House, but there’s ample room and lovely natural light in the space. (The inside is much nicer than the exterior suggests!) The walls are white, with some built in arch designs. You order at a lovely wooden counter.

The tables mostly have chairs for seating, but there are also some cushioned benches.

Food Options

There are several sandwich options and a handful of savory “toast” with spreads. We tried the avocado toast and turkey sandwich. We thought each was good! I appreciate a teahouse that serves savory options.

We noted they also serve desserts–two flavors of baklava, tiramisu, cheesecake, Lotus Biscoff cake, and tres leche cake. We weren’t able to try any dessert…this time.

Van Leeuwen is an ice cream chain that started in New York City. Now, you can find scoop shops across a large swatch of the United States and in Korea. According to their website, in the U.S. their name is pronounced “Van (like the car) Lou (like the name) Inn (like the hotel).”

Earl Grey Tea Ice Cream

A delightful Earl Grey Tea ice cream (photo above, left) is on their regular menu. Earl Grey tea is traditionally made with a black tea flavored with the oil of a bergamot orange. Nowadays, however, you can find lots of variations and other ingredients added.

I’ve tried many Earl Grey ice creams from different brands and this is my favorite so far! This flavor of Van Leeuwen’s French-style ice cream boasts complex notes. A combination of citrus and floral flavors, along with the tea base, make their Earl Grey Tea ice cream particularly delicious.

Hojicha Spring Special

On their spring specials menu for the last few years, Van Leeuwen features a delicious Hojicha ice cream. (See the photo above, right). It contains: “[s]weet cream blended with Japanese roasted green tea.” The hojicha magic comes through beautifully in this tea ice cream. I agree completely with their description on their Instagram. They share: “It’s a little toasty, it’s a little nutty, it’s a little caramel-y.”

The biggest problem I have one I’m getting a scoop of tea ice cream at Van Leeuwen in spring or summer is which flavor to get! It’s my kind of problem.

In July, a beloved member of our family was hospitalized, then moved to hospice care. It was an emotionally and physically tense time all around.

The day she moved from the hospital to the hospice was especially stressful. For several days, we didn’t know when the hospital would transfer her or where she would be placed. Then, it was suddenly happening.

We left the hospital and arrived frazzled and heartsore at the free-standing hospice facility (Casey House in Montgomery County, Maryland). As the nursing staff settled in and cared for our relative, two wonderful volunteers and a table full of beautiful teacups and baked treats greeted us. The volunteers were holding teatime, and providing the chance to sit around the table, drink tea, and talk. They invited hospice visitors to join them.

I didn’t take any photos or our tea time: I was too immersed in the present and respecting the space and the moment. This opportunity was such a caring way to offer solidarity and companionship during this very difficult time. We were able to choose our teacup and our tea. Then, we were sipping from a cup full of compassion. The whole experience was very humanizing and a real balm to our tender and frayed hearts. Once again, I was reminded of the comforting power of tea. (I’ve previously written about how tea creates community.)

Days later, I took a photo of the sign letting visitors know when the volunteers offer tea there. I also took a photo of the beautiful water lilies (photo above) on the patio of the hospice.

I’m so grateful for the excellent care Casey House provided to our loved one and the caring way they dealt with our family and visitors. Providing excellent palliative care to the dying person, as well as kindness and support to family and friends are the hallmarks of hospice. Tea time there was a meaningful part of that experience that helped our family hold it together through our grief.

We all benefited from a cup full of compassion.

Accessible Mugs Can Be Helpful

Swelling, strength, mobility issues with fingers or hands–among other things–can make it very helpful to have a mug that works for your body and circumstances.

This T Handle mug is the third type of mug that I’m reviewing for accessibility on the blog. I bought it, paying retail price, from The Wright Stuff.

T Handle Mug Specs

• Volume: If you fill it reasonably below the top, it holds 12 ounces (340 grams) of liquid. If you fill it to the very brim, it holds about 15 ounces. But, for obvious reasons, 12 or less is recommended.
• Size: 4.5″ (114mm) tall, 3.75″(92mm) diameter
• Weight: 12.15 ounces (344 grams) empty. Adding 12 ounces of water brings the total weight up to about 1.5 pounds (685 grams).
• Materials: Porcelain. I could only find the mug in this size and in the color white.
• Care instructions: Listed as dishwasher and microwave safe.
• Microwaving Results: When I microwaved water from cool to boiling in my microwave–stopping as soon as the water boiled–parts of the mug’s handle registered 145F with my laser thermometer. So, please exercise caution if you microwave it. Carefully determine whether the handle is a safe temperature to hold before you grab it.

Review of User Experiences

The T Handle mug looks like a classic white mug, except for the unusual T-shaped handle. When I first tried it, I wasn’t sure what to think. But, with a little experimenting, I appreciated the T-shaped handle. Still, I personally prefer a regular mug handle.

With the concerns that my loved one has–finger swelling and grip/strength issues–my biggest concern with this mug, like with the CURVD mug I reviewed, was the weight. The T-Handle mug weighs about the same–just slightly less–than the CURVD mug.

My relative liked the look of the T Handle mug and, to my surprise, was very enthusiastic about the handle. She liked the control it gave her when she slid her fingers around it and was able to place her thumb on top of the handle. She remarked that she loves mugs this size, but that the weight is a downside for her.

After we try out this mug for a few months, I’ll update the review if we have any new insights or perspectives.

Why I’m Drinking Less Tea

There are many reasons you might find yourself drinking less tea. Here’s mine…

In recent years, normally I enjoy one full tea session a day (about 3g of tea). Sometimes, I creep up to double that. Recently, however, I’ve radically reduced my tea consumption due to an acid reflux flare. Tea is usually mildly to moderately acidic. Also, caffeine can “loosen up your lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a ring of muscle between your esophagus and stomach,” according to the Cleveland Clinic.

So, I’ve worked my way down from the higher end of my caffeine range to less than half a gram a day. I’m sincerely hoping this reduced tea consumption will be a temporary measure and I am consulting with doctors. But, while I’m here, I still want to enjoy drinking less tea.

What Tea Means to Me and Maybe You

I’m imagining tea is important to you because you are reading a tea blog. You could probably guess that tea is important to me because I’m writing this tea blog. It’s much more than the blog, for me, as I share in my About Traci page. So, it’s been an interesting (and rewarding) challenge to consume less tea while keeping the pleasure and mindful engagement with it. I’ll share what’s been working for me so far as I try to enjoy drinking less tea.

How I’m Enjoying Tea Time with Less

Although I can still taste tea, I find myself leaning into some of the things that helped me enjoy teatime when I temporarily lost my sense of smell a few years ago. Using teaware that I particularly love, leaning into the sights, sounds, and touch of the entire tea experience helps! I’ve written about this in more detail in another post, “How to Enjoy Tea When You Can’t Taste.”

What’s different this time–and helping me enjoy drinking less tea–centers on on different teaware choices and steeping style. Three things I’ve noticed are:

• Bowl Tea. Choose a tea that can steep a long time without becoming bitter or astringent. Put a few tea leaves into a tea bowl and allow a long steep. This method gives more flavor than a regularly steeped cup that such a small amount of tea would give. Also, seeing the leaves brings extra pleasure–at least to me.
• Glass Teaware. Like with bowl tea, a glass gaiwan allows me to enjoy the visuals of the tea leaves and somehow enhances the flavor in my weaker-than-usual cup of tea. I’m also doing longer steeps.
• Tiny Tea. If you have any really small teapots–like under 100ml–this is their moment to shine! It helps with your tea-to-water ratio to give you a stronger cup of tea. The twist: these small teapots are usually used for gongfu cha, where the steeps are very short with a high leaf-to-water ratio. When reducing your tea, you essentially make a western style steep (3-5 minutes) in your tiny gongfu teapot. (Hat tip to Sooz of Being Tea who is the first person I heard refer to using less tea in a tiny teapot as “tiny tea.”)

Final Thoughts

One other thing has helped me enjoy drinking less tea and kept me from being sad about drinking less tea–the ability to make and serve tea to other people! Seriously, I guess it could make me sad to make tea that I can’t drink. But, it doesn’t. Instead, it makes me grateful!

Cold brewing tea usually involves putting tea leaves (or tea sachets) into room temperature or cold water. Then, you store it in the refrigerator from a few minutes to 12 hours to allow it to steep. You never use hot water. This method is called mizudashi (水出し) in Japanese, according to the Global Japanese Tea Association.

What Are the Advantages of Cold Brewing Tea?

We don’t have central air conditioning in our old house. So there are days when the window units are straining and it’s uncomfortably warm. In this kind of weather, making cold-brewed tea means we don’t have to turn on our kettle or heat water. So, it’s energy efficient and can help keep your home environment cooler.

Cold brewing can also change a tea’s flavor profile in ways you might enjoy! There is evidence for Japanese green teas, for example, that the tea tastes sweeter and more umami when cold brewed.

Japanese green tea that is cold brewed also contains less caffeine than when steeped at its normally recommended temperature. But, you can try cold brew for any kind of tea. It doesn’t have to be a Japanese Green.

How Does Cold Brew Impact Caffeine Level and Taste?

The temperature at which a tea is steeped is important. It influences how fast and the extent to which different components in the tea leaves are released–for example, caffeine and tannins. When certain teas are steeped at a cooler temperature, they can yield a sweeter infusion with less astringent tannins and lower levels of caffeine.

How Is Cold Brew Tea Different from Sun Tea?

Cold Brew differs from “sun tea” in that the latter involves using cold or room temperature water and then sitting the carafe in the sun while it steeps. Many of us have probably enjoyed tea this way; however, it is not a safe way to steep tea. Southern Living, for example, reports that a spokesperson at the FDA (the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S.A.) cautions:

“The tea may not reach temperatures high enough to kill harmful bacteria and the water temperature during sun tea brewing typically is within the ‘danger zone’ where bacteria can thrive, allowing growth of bacteria that can cause illness.”

Honestly, you can get very similar results much more safely by using a cold brew method, so why gamble with creating bacteria?

Finding Your Preferences

I’ve enjoyed many teas cold brewed. Interestingly, although I tend to use less tea than many hardcore tea drinkers when I prepare my tea hot, I find I often appreciate more tea leaves in my cold brew.

For example, I love Soocha Tea’s Korean teas. When I cold brew Sejak or Balhyocha, however, I prefer it when I use a higher leaf-to-water ratio than Soocha’s website recommends. Roughly speaking, they recommend a little over 4g of Sejak for 750 ml or about 3 cups. But, I prefer around 7g, even if I let the tea steep 12-18 hours. Of course, it could be the room temperature of the water, the difference between my water in Long Island and the water in Toronto, and/or personal preference.

All of this is to say experiment to find what you like and how you like it steeped!

One tip: cold brewing smoky teas have been the least predictable for me! For me, it’s hard to predict when the smokiness will cold brew balanced versus when it is intensified by the cold brew.
